Landscape resilience in Connecticut from Green Stormwater Infrastructure to Coastal Habitats

    Date: Friday, 3/1/19

    Location: W.B. Young 002

    Time: 12-1pm

Speakers: Michael Dietz and Juliana Barrett

    Abstract:

Climate change impacts are affecting the resilience of both coastal and inland communities in
Connecticut. Flooding, both from sea level rise and increased precipitation, is becoming more
prevalent with road closures, wash outs, impacts to homes and businesses, and increased water
pollution. We will provide a brief background on how precipitation patterns are changing here
in Connecticut, along with some detail on how green stormwater infrastructure can be used to
reduce impacts. We will also highlight a case study of a coastal community that is trying to
increase resilience to flooding through the use of multiple techniques including a living shoreline,
road elevating and dune restoration, and the obstacles they face moving forward.
