  • Dependent Coverage: Medical/Pharmacy Plans

The Office of the State Comptroller recently announced a change to group medical and pharmacy coverage for eligible dependents.

Effective January 1, 2019, group medical and pharmacy coverage for eligible dependents will continue through the end of the calendar year in which the dependent reaches age 26. For example, a dependent that turns age 26 in February 2019 can remain on coverage through December 31, 2019. This change does not impact dental coverage. The maximum date for dental coverage will remain the last day of the month in which the dependent turns age 19.

On January 1 of the year after the dependent turns 26, s/he is no longer eligible for state subsidized medical benefits unless s/he is certified as disabled. The dependent will automatically be removed from coverage and a COBRA notice will be sent addressed to the dependent at the address on file. Employees may continue the coverage for the dependent up to 36 months immediately following the loss of coverage at COBRA rates, which include a 2% administrative fee. More information, including rates, is available at COBRA Coverage (Storrs & Regionals; UConn Health).
