    "Localizing Network Analysis Using the Jackknife"

    Network analysis is a powerful approach to understanding the overall structure, or topology, of a network, and has been applied to the study of psychological and neurodevelopmental disorders with great effect. However, network analysis applied to neuroimaging research suffers from what Hallquist and Hillary (2018) call the "theory-to-scale gap," where inferences at a whole-brain level do not imply differences in specific brain structures or functional systems, and it is these local differences that are of most interest to researchers. In this talk, these resolution issues with whole-brain network analyses are discussed and a solution, the Network Based Statistic (NBS) jackknife, is proposed. This is a flexible modeling framework that allows researchers to identify which, if any, specific network structures or elements are contributing to whole network inferences. An analysis of resting state functional MRI data from children with ADHD and typically developing controls is used to illustrate the use of the NBS jackknife. Results from this analysis suggest that the subcortical network is less well functionally integrated in children with ADHD than in typically developing controls.
