  • 10/10 Mr. Murray on Housing Equity Use of Older American

Mr. Tim Murray, University of Connecticut

Seminar Title: “A Model of Housing Equity Use of Older Americans”

    Abstract:

Many older Americans remain in their house well into their later years and do not use the accumulated equity to help finance spending in retirement.  The literature has proposed that one possible explanation for this is that older Americans treat their house as form of precautionary savings to use in the event of a health shock or unexpected medical expenses.  This presentation will present a model of how older Americans behave when making housing decisions and exploring the role of an unknown future health shock plays into their decisions, looking to better understand if older homeowners remain in their home as a form of precautionary savings.
