  • 3/28 Tertulia w/Virginia Zavala-New Bilingualisms

    Tertulia-Speaker Series featuring Virigina Zavala Cisneros who will discuss "New Bilingualisms and Old Categories in Preservice Teacher Ecucation: Reflections form the Andes." Although Peru’s Intercultural Bilingual Education (IBE) program has been attempting to pursue new directions, it still carries many ideologies and practices that have defined it since it started half a century ago. Professor Zavala will discuss the way some of these ideologies and practices related to language are reproduced in a preservice teacher training program in one of the capital city’s private universities, which implements a national policy of social inclusion for Quechua-speaking youth from vulnerable contexts.

    Professor Zavala has a PhD in sociolinguistcs from Georgetown University and currently teaches at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. She is in New York this semester conducting research.
